The higher the page rank of the web directory that you submit to, the more importance that Google will put on your link from that directory. This is also the case when you have a blog article done about your website the higher the Google page rank the better google will give more importance to the ranking of your website. Always check the traffic of a web directory, most if not all web directories will tell you what their daily traffic is, remember the more the merrier when it comes to web or link directory traffic. A link directory focuses on the linking to other websites along with categorizing the links in the directory. Most web directories are categorized by either a keyword or what type of site it is. There are many types of directories, the yang and yin of the web directories is the Dmoz.org, this is the web directory that is Human edited and Google will base the authorization of the website from it. If you are not in Dmoz then you are not able to take advantage of the bump Google will give you in the search. I have been a Dmoz.org editor in the past, noticed that some sites will never get added. I have some websites that were submitted 5 or 6 years ago, never added. Other directories are bid for position, free automated submission, references, shopping and there is even a Yahoo one. Anyway by submitting to link directories, you will get the extra link real estate to start your way to good search engine results.
